Fujimino House“space,light,shadow” created by “carving out”
Aside from fields on the northern side, this lot in a residential district on the outskirts of Tokyo is surrounded by closely packed houses. In order to attain the floor space that the client requested, it was necessary to design a planar structure that completely filled the area allowed by building-to-land ratio laws. The frame maximizes the air volume while staying within height regulations. The architects then subtracted from the volume by carving out an entryway porch and second-floor balcony so as not to exceed further regulations that limit floor-area-to-lot ratios. They then added windows to these carved-out spaces, creating a diversity of spaces filled with light and shadow. The approach brings light and air into the house while screening visibility from surrounding homes.
