MDSKiyotoshi Mori + Natsuko Kawamura

This is a terraced housing complex consisting of a series of terrace-style units situated in the quiet residential neighborhood of Gotenyama. It operates as high-end rental housing within this tranquil area, which traces its roots to samurai residences. Achieving a favorable living environment on the deep north-south lot was a challenge. This was addressed by providing two courtyards per unit, ensuring ventilation and natural light on each floor. The floor layout features a connected Japanese-style room on the first floor, creating a tranquil Japanese space connected to a walled garden. The second floor houses the master bedroom, sanitary facilities, and the living-dining-kitchen area. Stairs leading to the rooftop are positioned behind the dining-kitchen, allowing light to pour in from above during the day while also creating a wind passage utilizing the height difference. Ascending to the rooftop offers a view of the beautiful nightscape of buildings standing beyond the rooftop line of Gotenyama.
